Overview

Omnissa Horizon allows user to access on-campus desktops/software from off-campus. This document provides users with a step by step guide on accessing and using NMSU’s Virtual lab.

Before you begin

Before accessing the Virtual Lab (via web browser or client), connect to the VPN using Cisco AnyConnect. If you haven't downloaded Cisco AnyConnect, follow the steps below.

Two methods are available for accessing Virtual Lab. Click on your preferred option to navigate to the relevant section.

Method #1 Omnissa Horizon Client

Accessing Virtual Lab (Two Methods)

Method #1
Step 1: Installing the Client (Preferred Method)

This Method will require  a restart of your computer 

  1. Go to https://view.nmsu.edu/
  2. Click on "To see the full list of Omnissa Horizon Clients", to select the download that best fits your operating system.

  1. You will automatically be directed to a page. Find what applies to your device (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) and click “Go to Downloads” at the right.

 

  1. In the next screen, click Download.

 

  1. Locate the download typically in your download folder near the browser address bar. Double- click or select Open File.  

 

  1. User Account Control will open a message and ask, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?” Select Yes.
  2. Click Agree & Install

 

  1. Once install is complete, click Finish.

  1. Click Restart Now.

 

  1. Omnissa Horizon Client icon should now be on your computer screen. Double-Click icon to open.

 

Step 2: Login to Servers

  1. Click Add Server

 

  1. Type vdi.nmsu.edu, then click Connect.

 

  1. Enter your NMSU credentials, click Login

  1. Once signed in, you will see available virtual machines. To launch one, either double-click it or click the three-dot menu and select Launch.

 

  1. Once you select a machine, you will be logged in automatically.

 

Navigation Icons

Check out the menu on the left. Here's what each option does:

  • All: View all available virtual machines
  • Favorites: Use the Star icon to save virtual machines to your homepage.
  • Create: Create folders to organize virtual machines.
  • Help: Learn more about Omnissa Horizon Client
  • About: Detailed information About Omnissa Horizon Client 
  • Software: Updates: A red dot will appear when there are available downloads.
  • Settings: Change time zone, reset, enable Windows Key, etc. 
    • USB Devices: Connect the USB devices to remote desktop and applications.
    • See other available options to customize your experience. 
  • Disconnect: To Log off server

 

Method #2

Step 1: Accessing Web Client

  1. Go to https://vdi.nmsu.edu
  2. Click on Omnissa Horizon Web Client

 

  1. Sign in with your NMSU credentials. 

 

  1. Once signed in, you will see available virtual machines. To launch one, either left-click it or click the three-dot menu and select Connect.

 

  1. Once you select a machine, you will be logged in automatically.

 

  1. Click on the tab to expand other options.

  1. When finished, double-click the Sign Out icon on the virtual computer desktop.

Navigation Icons

Check out the menu in the top left. Here's what each option does, from left to right. 

  • "Ctrl+Alt+ Delete" Shortcut": Allows you to Lock, Sign out, Change a password or access the Task Manager. 
  • Transfer Files: Upload files from desktop (local client system) to virtual computer desktop. Uploaded files will be stored in “Documents” folder.
  • Copy & Paste: Copy & Paste content from your local system to remote desktop/application.
  • Open Menu: shortcut to access settings, Fullscreen, About, and Log out. 
    • Settings: Click to view additional settings options
    • Fullscreen: Expands your virtual machine screen
    • About: Learn more about VMware
    • Log out: Click to Sign out
