Outlook - Display & send full Header of an Email Message

Overview

There are instances in which you need to send the information found in the 'full headers' of an email message. For example, you would need to do this if you are reporting possible phishing or spam corresponding to the email in question. This document will assist you in finding this information using a variety of email services.

Procedure

Microsoft Outlook for Windows:

  • Double-click the email in question to open it in a new window. 

  • Select the File tab, navigate to the bottom, click Properties. 

  • You will find the email data next to Internet headers.

 

Outlook Web App (OWA) 'Original Look': 

  • Double-click the email in question to open it in a new window. 

  • Expand the drop-down menu (the down arrow), to the right of "Reply all", and within the email window.

  • Navigate to the bottom of this menu and click View Message Details.

 

Outlook Web App (OWA) 'New Look': 

  • Double-click the email in question to open it in a new window. 

  • Click the options icon (three dots near the top right), found within the email window, and then click View Message Details.

 

Outlook for macOS:

  • From your Inbox (or other folders), right-click or hold down the control key and click an email message. 

  • From the menu displayed, select View Source to view all headers. 

Mail (macOS):

  • With an email message selected, navigate to the View menu (found at the top of your screen) and select Message.

  • From this window, you can either select All Headers or Long Headers to display all header information. 

 

Apple Mail:

  • With an email message selected, navigate and click on the down arrow in the upper right corner. 

  • From this menu, select View message details to display header information. 

 

Thunderbird (Windows & macOS):

  • Navigate and select to the View menu, at the top of your screen.

  • Move down to the Headers option and hover over it to expand the menu. 

  • From the "Headers" option select All to display full headers in all of your emails.
