Malwarebytes- Virus & Malware Removal Tool

Overview

Malwarebytes is a free Virus & Malware removal tool that helps detect, quarantine, and remove malicious content from your computer+.

Note: Malwarebytes also offers a paid version with additional real-time protection features. However, it is not required to purchase the premium version. Most users will find the free/basic version sufficient for one-time or on-demand scans.

Before you begin

Download Malwarebytes: Get the latest version for Windows or macOS from the official site: Malwarebytes Free Downloads

Procedure

Windows Install 

  1. Download Malwarebytes for Windows from the official site.

  2. Open your Downloads folder and double-click MBSetup.exe.

  3. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to allow the installer to run.

  4. In the setup wizard, click Install.
    (Use Advanced Options if you need to change the install location.)

  5. When asked who you’re protecting, choose:

    • Me or my family (Personal use)

    • My organization (Business use)

  6. You may be offered to install Browser Guard — choose Yes, sounds good or Skip as preferred.

  7. Once installation is complete, click Done.

  8. Launch Malwarebytes and click Get Started.

  9. Choose one of the following:

    • Buy Now – purchase a subscription

    • Activate Subscription – sign in or enter a license key

    • Maybe Later – start a free 14-day trial or use the free version

You’ll then be taken to the main Dashboard, where you can run scans and manage threats.

macOS Install 

  1. Download Malwarebytes for Mac from the official site.

  2. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the .pkg installer file.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts. If blocked, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

  4. Click Continue, agree to the license, then click Install.

  5. Enter your Mac password or use Touch ID to authorize.

  6. After installation, click Close.

  7. Open the Malwarebytes app and click Get Started.

  8. Choose between:

    • Personal Computer (home use)

    • Work Computer (organization use)

  9. Choose:

    • Buy Now, Activate License, or Maybe Later to use the free version or 14-day trial.

  10. Grant Full Disk Access:

    • Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access

    • Toggle Malwarebytes Protection ON and authenticate with your password

Once setup is complete, you'll be taken to the main Dashboard.

Running a Scan

  1. Open the Malwarebytes app. 
  2. Click the Scan button to start scanning your device. 
  3. If threats are found, you'll be prompted to quarantine and remove the malicious items.
