Overview
This article focuses on using PuTTY to connect to a server via SSH for the specific purpose of editing your web.nmsu.edu website. While PuTTY can be used for a variety of remote connection tasks, we will concentrate on this practical application.
Before you begin
If you are off campus or unable to connect using the campus network, you must connect to the VPN first.
Follow this guide for instructions: VPN – Install and Connect Cisco AnyConnect (Windows).
Procedure
This video will assist you through the process of connecting to a secure socket shell or (SSH) using PuTTY. There is also accompanying documentation if you prefer to follow the instruction without the video.
Install and Launch
Step 1: Download PuTTY
Go to the following website in your browser:
Step 2: Choose the Right Installer
Under "Package Files", select the version of PuTTY that matches your Windows system:
Step 3: Run the Installer
Find the file in your Downloads folder and double-click it.
The Setup Wizard will launch. Click Next to continue.
Step 4: Choose the Install Location
You can choose a different destination folder if you'd like.
Otherwise, leave it as the default and click Next.
Step 5: Select Product Features
The default settings are fine for most users.
Make any changes if needed, then click Install to begin the installation.
Step 6: Finish Installation
Once installation is complete, a Read Me file may open.
You can close it when you're done reviewing it. Then click Finish.
Click the Start menu and locate PuTTY in your programs list.
Select the shortcut simply named “PuTTY” to launch it.
Step 8: Set Up the Connection
In the PuTTY window, type web.nmsu.edu
in the Host Name field.
Make sure the Port is set to 22
.
Click Open at the bottom of the window.
Step 9: Log in to the Server
A terminal window will appear asking you to "login as."
Use your myNMSU username and press Enter.
Then enter your password (note: the password won’t appear as you type) and press Enter again.
Note: If you're connected successfully, you’ll see a login time displayed.
If the session times out or fails to connect, close PuTTY and try again starting from Step 7.
