Thunderbird - Setup NMSU email

Overview

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free and open-source cross-platform email client, personal information manager, news client, RSS and chat client.

Before you begin

Here we will learn how to configure your NMSU email within Thunderbird.  This guide assumes you already have Thunderbird installed, and are somewhat familiar with its interface.

Procedure

Step 1:

Add an email account.  First, from the menu bar, go to Account Settings.  Note that this could be under a different menu item for different operating systems.  Then click Account Actions > Add Mail Account.  This will bring up the Account Setup screen.

  • Note that if you open Thunderbird and have not previously added any email accounts, this should come up automatically.

Step 2:

Enter your full name & email address.  DO NOT enter your password!

Step 3:

Once you've entered these, a Configure manually link will appear underneath Remember password.  Click this link, and it will open up a Manual configuration section, containing configuration for both Incoming Server and Outgoing Server.

Step 4:

Enter the following values into the configuration

  • Incoming Server
    • Protocol:  IMAP
    • Hostname:  outlook.office365.com
    • Port:  993
    • Connection security:  SSL/TLS
    • Authentication method:  OAuth2
    • Username:  <yourusername>@nmsu.edu
  • Outgoing Server
    • Protocol:  SMTP
    • Hostname:  smtp.office365.com
    • Port:  587
    • Connection security:  STARTTLS
    • Authentication method:  OAuth2
    • Username:  <yourusername>@nmsu.edu

Step 5:

Click the Re-test button to make sure the configuration is correct

Step 6:

Now click the Done button

Step 7:

This will now open a new tab/popup for NMSU Two Factor Authentication (2FA) .  Login here with your NMSU credentials.

Results

At this point, you should see Account successfully created.  Click Finish, and you can begin using your email.
