How to Reset Your myNMSU & Canvas Password

Summary

Resetting your NMSU pass phrase every couple of years keeps your account secure. You may want to change your password for security reasons, or you may have forgotten your password and you want to reset it.

Overview

The following instructions will guide you through resetting your myNMSU and Canvas password if you're locked out. Before you begin, make sure to sign out of any website or application that uses your NMSU email and password. Then, follow the steps below to reset or change your credentials. 

Procedure


Step 1:

Visit my.nmsu.edu and select 'Reset Password'

Step 2:

Enter your email in the 'Email or Username' field, then type the characters shown in the image or listen to the audio and enter the characters. Select Next.

Step 3:

On the left-hand side of your screen, select your preferred authentication method from the list of options.
Then, complete the process by approving the notification or entering the code in your chosen authenticator app.
Select Next.

Step 4:

Enter your new password in the 'Enter new password field', then confirm it by typing the same password in the 'Confirm new Password' field. 
Password should be at least 17 characters longClick Finish to confirm password change.

Step 5:
After a successful password change, a confirmation message will appear. Allow up to 5 minutes for changes to take effect, then test your new password by logging in at my.nmsu.edu.

Common Issues and Solutions

Q: What do I do if I don't receive an authentication code?

  • Ensure your phone or device is properly linked to your NMSU account. For help, visit our 2FA articles.
  • Try selecting a different authentication method.

Q: My new password isn't being accepted. What should I do?

  • Make sure your password meets the 17-character requirement.
  • Avoid using any previously used passwords.
  • Double-check for typos when confirming your new password.
