Overview
This article provides step-by-step instructions to help users locate the serial number on their Windows or macOS device. Knowing your device’s serial number is important for technical support, warranty verification, and proper asset tracking.
Procedure
Windows Laptop/Desktop
Method 1— Physical Label
For laptops, look on the bottom of the device.
For desktops, check the side or back of the computer tower.
The serial number is printed on a sticker and is usually labeled S/N, SN, or Serial Number.
Method 2— Command Prompt
Step 1
Click Start (Windows Icon), type cmd, and select Command Prompt.
Step 2
In the Command Prompt window, type: wmic bios get serialnumber and press Enter.
Your serial number will appear under SerialNumber.

macOS Laptop/Desktop
Method 1— Product or Packaging
Look for the serial number printed on your Mac. It’s usually on the underside, near the regulatory markings. Or look on the original product packaging.
Method 2— About This Mac
From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. The window that opens includes the model name and serial number, as shown in the example below.
