Overview
If you're moving to a new phone, transfer your authentication method before wiping or giving away your old device. Keep both devices handy during setup.
Available authentication methods include Microsoft Authenticator (preferred and most secure), Passkey, Security Key, and Hardware Token.
Procedure
Add Authenticator on the New Device
Set up your preferred sign-in method on your new device before removing the old one.
Step 1
- From your new device go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
- Sign in with your myNMSU credentials.
- An authentication request will be sent to your old phone to verify access.
- Once approved, you'll be redirected back to the Security info page on your new device.
- From the Security info screen, select Add sign-in method.

- Choose Passkey, Security Key, or Hardware token.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
Note: Phone-based authentication may be used only with prior approval and if no other option is available. Microsoft Authenticator is the recommended method. For step-by-step instructions on enabling 2FA, see the Microsoft Authenticator App Setup article.

Test the New Device
Confirm your new phone is set up for 2FA before deleting or deactivating your old one.
Step 2
- Try signing in to a service that requires 2FA (e.g., logging out and back in from your my.nmsu.edu.)
- Approve the authentication on your new phone.
- Confirm you can complete sign-in successfully.
Remove the Old Device
Clean up your account so only your new device is linked.
Step 3
- Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info from your new device.
- Locate the authentication method associated with your old device.
- Select Delete, then confim by selecting OK.
