2FA- How to Set Up the Microsoft Authenticator App

Overview

Your password can be easily compromised. Enhance security with two-factor authentication (2FA). The free Microsoft Authenticator app adds an extra layer of security by requiring multiple verification methods when signing into an application.
 

Before you begin

1. You will need two devices for this task:

  • Your phone or mobile device (for receiving 2FA prompts). The steps below are marked "On your phone or Mobile Device:"
  • Another computer or device (to access your account). The steps below are marked "On your web browser/Computer:"

2. Install the Microsoft Authenticator App:  

To install Authenticator on your iOS device:

or download and install Authenticator from the Apple app store. 

To install Authenticator on your Android device:

Procedure


Step 1:

Visit my.nmsu.edu and sign in with your “NMSU email” and “Passphrase,” then click Next.

Step 2: 
On the "More information required" screen, click Next.

Step 3:

Make sure your phone or mobile device is ready for setup.

  • On your phone or Mobile Device: Open the Microsoft Authenticator App.
  • Select QR Code Scanner or Choose "+" (to Add account)
  • Select "Work or school account"
  • Select “Scan QR Code”
  • A QR scanner will open on your phone.
  • Your device may ask for camera and notification access from the Authenticator app. Select ACCEPT for both.

Step 4:
Click Next.

Click Next.

Step 6:

  • On your phone or Mobile Device, use the Authenticator App's QR Code Scanner to scan the QR code.
  • On your phone or Mobile Device: Select Done to close the code screen
  • You should now see both “New Mexico State University” Along with your NMSU email listed in the Authenticator App. 
  • On your web browser: Click Next

Step 7:
The next screen will prompt you to approve a notification on your phone/mobile device by entering the number in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Step 8:

  • On your phone/mobile device, Open and Approve the notification by entering the 2-digit number displayed on the screen.
    • This can be done by swiping down on your mobile device and clicking on the notification.
    • You can also open the authenticator app manually from the apps screen on your mobile device.
  • Click Yes.

Step 9:
On your web browser: After approving the notification on your phone, you'll see "Notification Approved." Click Next.

Step 10:
Your account is now enabled for 2FA. Click Done.
